If you grew up anytime before the year 2000, then chances are you may have collected baseball cards at some point. More specifically, if you grew up in the late 80′s early 90′s then you know all about 92 Bowman baseball cards. Ok, 1992 you had Eric B & Rakim on the radio some good dance and house music, Hot 97 was making some big changes, maybe you were cruising on your BMX GT Performer or maybe your Mongoose. If it was winter you were sporting your favorite Starter Jacket and snap back if it was summer your favorite Champion shorts and Karl Kani t-shirt. If it was basketball season you probably couldn’t wait to get home to watch Michael Jordan heading in to MSG to play against Pat Ewing and the Knicks. Maybe you would fit in a game of Sonic or Super Mario World before the game comes on. Ok, so back to Bowman baseball cards. When these things first came out, stores couldn’t give them away. It was a huge set of cards that looked really bland outside of the gold alternative to each card. Sure, they had a UV coating and great player selection but the design of the cards was nothing to write home about. Months passed and I always remembered seeing these cards rotting on the shelves at 1 dollar a pack, that was until something happened. Word at the time (and I don’t know if this is fact or fiction) is that since stores couldn’t sell the stuff they had they were no longer ordering cases. Bowman then took all the remaining cards and burned them. If you followed Beckett back in the day, you’ll remember that these cards were like 50 cents to maybe 4 bucks before sky rocketing. After that, packs were going for 15-20 dollars and card prices went through the roof. Some 21 years later the value has since come down but thats only because baseball cards have lost a lot of their appeal, instead replaced by sneakers as the must have collectible. Still, 1992 Bowman provides for some dope photo’s to look back at and will always hold dear memories of when we spent tons of money on baseball cards and we beat the crap out of or sneakers. Stay tuned for some more card stories.
